Amberd Fortress

The historical complex on the slope of Mount Aragats in Armenia consists of a castle of the VII century and a church of the XI century. It is located at an altitude of 2300 meters above sea level. It is assumed that the castle was founded by the princes of Kamsarakan, then the castle passed into the possession of the Armenian military commander Vahram Pahlavuni. Subsequently, it was bought by the Armenian rulers of the Bagratuni dynasty, who turned the castle into the main outpost of their kingdom. The church in it was built in 1026. The castle was first captured by the Seljuk Turks in the 11th century, and in 1236 the castle was finally destroyed by the Mongols. Numerous underground passages led from the castle down into the gorge, some of which can still be found today. Also, there was a water supply system in Amberd, so far only a 4-kilometer part of it has been explored, the beginning has not yet been found.
