The pagan temple of Garni, dedicated to the god of light and sun Mihr, was built in 77. According to Greek sources, the temple was founded by the Armenian king Trdatus I, but in 305, when Armenia had already converted to Christianity, Trdatus III forced the destruction of all pagan religious buildings. Currently, the Garni Temple is the only structure preserved from the pagan period. The temple of Garni is built of gray basalt. The huge building stands on 24 columns. The number of pillars symbolizes 24 hours of the day. The temple is located between two vertical cliffs, which are connected by walls 180 meters long. In the past, the complex had a Roman bathhouse, a royal summer residence and a seventh-century church. A great attraction is the mosaic preserved in the bathroom, made up of natural stones of 15 colors.
