No one can say exactly when this megalithic complex arose. According to various estimates, from 5 to 7.5 thousand years ago. Its names are translated differently: Zorats Karer - “mighty stones”, “stones of strength” or “stone army”, locals call it “Standing Stones” or “Protruding Stones”. But the name Karahunj, i.e. “sounding, talking stones”, was given to him in 1994 by academician, radio physicist and radio astronomer Paris Geruni.
This landmark of Armenia consists of 223 stones, 80 of which have round holes of the same size, created by human hands. When the wind blows, these stones begin to produce such unusual natural “arias” that it’s time to write them down. However, it is unlikely that people did such a titanic work just to create a “stone choir”.
